I grew up in South Africa and, after school, worked in Photography, Advertising and Interior Design.
I travelled widely in South Africa and its landscape, its people and its politics still have a profound and enduring influence on me.
On returning to the United Kingdom I completed a B.A.Fine Art (Hons) degree from Cardiff Collage of Art followed by a P.G.C.E. (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) before securing a post at a community college in Plymouth teaching Ceramics and Art & Design.
While teaching I started to work in “torn paper collage”. I used to set my GCSE students a project of using this technique of building up an image out of pieces torn from coloured magazines. This produces an impressionistic image with unexpected depths, tones and moods. It worked well in the teaching situation and my own work started to generate much interest and success.
I took early retirement from teaching in 2001 and now work in my studio at home on the Rame Peninsula. I continue to work in various media, as well as collage, and produce Giclée prints of all my original works. I have work, including commissions, in many private collections, both in the U.K. and abroad.
